Regions

For logistical purposes, it has been necessary to divide the areas where HeartCry missionaries work into six distinct geographical regions, two of which are further divided into sub-regions. As some of these regions and sub-regions do not strictly adhere to the most commonly accepted geographical definitions, we’ve included the following descriptions to help clarify our terminology.

Africa: This region is defined as the area encompassing Sub-Saharan Africa (all African nations which lie south of the Sahara Desert). It spans from Mauritania in the west to Somalia in the east, and from Sudan in the north to South Africa in the south. It does not include the northernmost portion of Africa – from Morocco to Egypt. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in six countries in Africa: Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia.

Asia: This region is defined as the area encompassing the lands east of the Central Asian republics: from Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka in the west to Japan and Papua New Guinea in the east.

  • South Asia: This sub-region is defined as the area encompassing the Indian Subcontinent and China. It spans from Pakistan in the west to Sri Lanka in the south to China in the north and east. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in four countries in South Asia: Bhutan, China, India, and Nepal.
  • Southeast Asia: This sub-region is defined as the area generally known as Southeast Asia, plus the island nation of Japan. It spans from the Indochina Peninsula in the west to Japan in the north to Papua New Guinea in the south and east. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in three countries in Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, and Japan.

Eurasia: This region is defined as the Russian-speaking world; it has territory in two continents and, generally speaking, is comprised of the states of the former Soviet Union. Its land area includes Russia in Europe and Asia; Belarus and the Baltic states in Eastern Europe; the Central Asian republics (from Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan); and the Transcaucasian republics (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan). It does not include Ukraine or Moldova. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in three countries in Eurasia: Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Note: The region “Eurasia” was formerly designated “Russia.”

Europe: This region is defined as the area encompassing the nations of the European continent, except for the Baltic states, Belarus, and European Russia.

  • Eastern Europe: This sub-region is defined as the land area which spans from Poland and Ukraine in the north to Serbia and Bulgaria in the south. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in three countries in Eastern Europe: Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine.
  • Western Europe: This sub-region is defined as the area encompassing the crescent-shaped portion of Europe which begins in Norway; extends through the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal, Greece, and Germany; and ends in Finland. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in seven countries in Western Europe: Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden.

Latin America: This region is defined as the area encompassing Mexico, Central America, and South America. It extends from Mexico, through Colombia, to Argentina and Chile. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in three countries in Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. Note: The region “Latin America” was formerly designated “South America.”

Middle East: This region is defined as the area which encompasses North Africa and Western Asia. In Africa, it spans from Morocco in the west to Egypt in the east. In Asia, it spans from Turkey in the north to the Arabian Peninsula in the south, and from Israel and Lebanon in the west to Afghanistan in the east. HeartCry currently supports missionaries in one disclosable country in the Middle East: Israel. HeartCry also supports several missionaries working in three protected countries in the Middle East and assists in the translation of theological literature in Turkey.
