Thank you for your prayers for the Pastors’ Conference in northern Peru. While there were not as many pastors in attendance as had been anticipated, due to a severe drought that has made things very difficult throughout the region, the conference nonetheless seemed fruitful, and the fellowship was sweet. The men present at the conference ranged from those who have faithfully labored in Gospel ministry for over twenty years, to one eighteen year-old man who has been pastoring the church in his village for just over one year.
The Lord clearly gave grace to both Justin and J.T. in the teaching series, as well as to each of the translators who labored tirelessly throughout the week. Over the four days, the men received instruction on the two themes of “Jesus in the Old Testament,” taught by Justin Huffman, and “The Gospel and the Life of the Pastor,” taught by J.T. The teaching material was as follows:
Justin Huffman | J.T. |
Genesis 1-3 Jesus as Creator, Conqueror, and Covering | Mark 8:27-38 The Gospel in the Gospels |
Genesis 6, 12, 22 Jesus as the Flood, Seed, and Lamb | 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 The Gospel Produces Servants |
Exodus 3, 12, 14-15 Jesus as Jehovah, Passover, and Exodus | Ephesians 5:22-6:4 The Gospel and the Family |
Leviticus 4, 8 Jesus as Our Sin Offering and High Priest | Philippians 2:1-13 The Gospel and Sanctification |
Numbers 11, 20, 21 Jesus as the Manna, Rock, and Serpent | 1 Peter 4:12-19 The Gospel and Suffering |
I Kings 8:20-63 Jesus as the Son of David, Temple, and Solomon | 1 Peter 5:1-4 The Gospel and Faithful Shepherding |
Psalm 22 The Cross from the Inside | Romans 1:16-17 The Gospel and Evangelism |
In addition to the teaching, the pastors were also required to work in groups as they sought to apply the truths they were learning. Each group of 4 or 5 men was given a text from either the Old Testament, New Testament, or both, and asked to show how that text revealed Gospel truths. After each group had worked for some time together, a representative from each group presented their mini-sermon to the rest of the pastors.
Now we pray that the Lord might grant each of these men grace as they seek to apply the truths of the conference in their daily ministry as pastors. With the hopes of promoting continued growth and understanding in the topics of the conference, DVD’s will be made with each of the teaching sessions, and sent to the men in the mountains, since they do not have access to internet.
