Embedded in the center of the northwestern lowlands of Europe, Belgium is bordered by Germany, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Belgium is a highly developed country, as its capital, Brussels, is a center point for many international affairs such as NATO or the European Union. The country is largely split between a Dutch-speaking population and a French-speaking population, though a small German-speaking population remains as well. This also contributes to a complex system of government organized by communities and different political parties. With a population of 11.7 million, less than 2 percent of Belgians identify as evangelical. The Constitution of Belgium allows for freedom of religion, and most people identify as traditionally Catholic. Despite the fact that church attendance is dropping, nominal Catholicism still holds sway over much of Belgium. Amidst this industrially developed and prosperous country, there is deep darkness and an urgent need for faithful gospel-preaching believers and churches.
