Bordered by Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia, Paraguay is nestled within the heart of South America. The country is home to nearly 7 million residents, with over 2 million of those residents living in the capital city of Asuncion. Due to the high number of immigrants who have been received by the country, Paraguay has a wide array of ethnicities. The country is also a bilingual nation, speaking both Spanish and Guarani. Guarani, an indigenous national language, is spoken widely through the country, yet Spanish is preferred in organized political and social settings. Although it is viewed and often classified as one of the most religious countries in South America, the Paraguayan religious landscape is dominated by Catholicism even though the state is official secular. Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Paraguayan constitution, which also allows false religions, whether indigenous or imported, to be easily introduced and grown from within.
