Pakistan is officially The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and is located in South Asia. Modern Pakistan was established in 1947 from the Muslim majority regions of British-India as an Islamic State. Pakistan is bordered by India, Afghanistan, Iran, and China. Pakistan is the fifth most populated nation in the world, exceeding 215 million people. The official language is Urdu and spoken by 75% of the population. The ethnic groups that comprise the population consist of Punjabi (44.7%), Pashtun (15.4%), Saraiki (8.4%), Muhajirs (7.6%), other (6.3%).
Pakistan is located in the 10/40 window, and the majority of the population and people groups remain unreached with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The official religion of Pakistan is Islam, and Muslims are 98.8% of the Pakistani population. There are 5008 people groups in Pakistan, and 501 remain unreached (98.6%).
Christianity is a minority religion comprising less than 1% of the population. The evangelical witness is unknown but is a small percentage of the people. Fundamental Islam, led by the Taliban, is a minority but often is responsible for violence against religious minorities. Besides the persecution from Islam, many Christians suffer from the blasphemy law. The blasphemy law “imposes the death penalty on anyone who defames Mohammed, and life in prison for anyone who defiles a Quran. Extremists routinely use the law – as a pretext for underlying personal motives of revenge or envy – to falsely accuse innocents and stir up enough religious frenzy to generate mob justice.”
While there are constitutional freedoms for Christians, Christians are marginalized in Pakistan and often suffer for their faith. Please remember to pray for Pakistan that the gospel will be proclaimed, and Jesus Christ will be exalted, and biblical churches will be established throughout the nation. Pray Christians would be courageous to share their faith, and the church “may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.”
