Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings in the name our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On Saturday morning, April 25, 2015 an earthquake hit Nepal in Barpak Village Gorkha District. We were at the end of our worship service; suddenly it came and the houses were shaking. The earthquake registered 7.9 and small earthquakes followed afterwards. This violent earthquake damaged Lamjung, Gorkha, Rasuwa, Dolakha, Sunsari, Sinduplanchok, Bhaktpur, Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Kabreplanchock and many more districts.

The earthquake has devastated Nepal and brought much pain and suffering to the Nepalese peoples. On April 27, the Central Committee of the Reformed Churches of Nepal held an emergency meeting and came to the conclusion that we must help the needy ones. We, the elders, prayed together and asked God’s grace and mercy for the victims and we decided to visit the Lamjung District.

On April 28, Bro. Greg P. and myself departed at 10:30 am but were delayed by heavy rains in Butwal until 2:30 pm. The drive was long and we reached our destination in Besishar, Lamjung at 10:00 pm. From Naryanghat to Muglim the roads were jammed and we were tired and exhausted because of the long journey.

On April 29 Bro. Pradeep Koirala, Bro. Dil Bahadur, and I started on our journey at 8:30 am for Kolki in east Lamjung. It was a horrible journey on our motor bikes, struggling on the way and reaching Kolki at 3:00 pm.

After our arrival we discovered that 12 houses had totally collapsed, 69 houses were cracked and leaking, 2 persons were injured, and 1 person was dead. We had heard that there were a few believers in that area but we were unable to find Christians living there. We had an opportunity to share the gospel to some of the people personally. We pray that God may change their hearts and they may come to Christ.

We were unable to move back to Besishar on that day so we stayed the night. At midnight heavy rain fell and we couldn’t sleep because the roof was leaking. We were particulary looking to help the household of faith and on April 30 we learned that 11 Christian houses and one church meeting collapsed in Illam Pokhari. We tried to visit Illam Pokhari from Kolki and were unable to go because of the roads were impassible due to heavy rains.

We started our journey to Besishar at 10:00 am the next day and reached our destination at 3:00 pm. It was an unbelievable adventure and unforgettable moments that we experienced. We thank God for His grace and mercy in our journey. Thank you so much for your prayers and for wiring money for the victims. We discovered 24 houses belonging to Christians in Kolki and Illam Pokahari that need assistance by replacing the roofs with tin. If money from the budget is left we will provide rice, pulse, salt, oil and etc. for the Christian people in some other villages who are in great need.

Today brother Greg P. is moving back to Butwal to arrange many more things. The Reformed Churches of Nepal and HeartCry, along with other Christians, are also going to contribute to this work. I am staying here to discover more as to how we can help and use the money in a proper way for the needy ones. I am going to visit a place with Bro. Pradeep where it is reported that Christians are experiencing great difficulties. I want to see and discover how we can help these people. From Monday through Thursday we are planning to distribute what we have decided is necessary and needful. The roads are not good; totally damaged and hard to reach with materials in the places we visited. Please pray that God will open the roads and we can help these people as planned. Let our God be glorified in all this work and let His kingdom advance through the word of the gospel and deeds. We appreciate your prayers, encouragement, and supporting the needy ones.

Bro. Silas
