Testimony of Conversion

I was born and raised in a very religious home located in Bellville South, a community in Cape Town, South Africa. Going to church and Sunday school wasn’t something our family just did; it was a requirement.

My churchgoing record didn’t reflect my heart in the least.

When I was a nine year old boy, I started smoking dagga, more commonly known as marijuana. When I was twelve, I committed my first crime. From that age til my conversion, my life was without hope or purpose. I started to indulge my flesh even more, and my life reflected nothing but drugs and gangsterism. When I wasn’t leading a gang on the streets, I led one in prison.

One day, in my community, I heard some people preaching the gospel in an open air service. I didn’t care at that moment; I was too busy with my life of crime.

I got high on drugs, and robbed a store. I didn’t sleep for a few days.

I visited my girlfriend (who is now my wife) and we went to a drug house. We engaged in all sorts of things, and while we were sitting in the living room, in the middle of doing drugs, I felt convicted.

I became frustrated, and didn’t understand why I was thinking so much; I had grown up in the church, and that hadn’t ever pierced me. I told my girlfriend that I couldn’t live the life we lived any longer. We left the drug house and crossed the street to where her mother stayed. It was the same house I sold drugs out of. It was there that I bent the knee and confessed my sins. I called on the name of the Lord to save me and shower me in His grace.

I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was high on drugs, had committed a crime the previous day, and hadn’t slept in days.

Nonetheless, the Lord saved me.

The man climbing to his feet was not the same man that had bent the knee, and my life has never been the same.

Soli Deo Gloria.
