It is well-known that HeartCry Missionary Society was established to advance Christ’s kingdom by supporting indigenous missionaries on the field. However, HeartCry has a lesser-known purpose that is of equal importance to those of us who serve here: to demonstrate God’s faithfulness to meet the needs of any who wait upon Him in prayer, even when their faith is frail and their prayers feeble.
Over the last three decades, God has demonstrated that He is able and willing to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory. In fact, He has done exceedingly beyond all we could ask or think. Throughout the years our faith has always been meager and our prayers too few, but God has always been faithful. As many saints throughout the ages have testified, He delights in vindicating even the smallest confidence of His children.
Our Principles
The following is a list of HeartCry’s financial principles. They are based in part upon “The Principles of the Institution,” established by George Müller to govern the activities of the Bristol orphanages.
- Every need of this ministry will be obtained through prayer. We may share our missionary vision with others and even make known to them the specific tasks that the Lord has laid on our hearts to do, but we may not raise support by publishing our needs or by prodding our brothers and sisters to give. If this ministry is of the Lord, then He will be our Patron. If He is with us, He will direct His people to give, and we will prosper. If He is not with us, we will not and should not succeed.
- We will never enlarge or sustain this ministry by contracting debts. The command in Romans 13:8, “Owe nothing to anyone…” does not forbid the use of loans but warns against default or negligence in paying what is due. We will not censure any ministry that acquires debt. Nevertheless, we have made the commitment to never do so. This has a three-fold purpose. First, it protects us from trusting in the arm of the flesh and from manipulating events. Second, if we wait upon God in prayer and He provides for the work we hope to do, then we have greater certainty that it is His will for us to do it. Third, we desire to demonstrate to God’s people that He is enough. Therefore, in secret prayer and God helping us, we will carry the needs of this ministry to the Lord and act according to His provision.
- We are fully committed to supporting the missionaries on the field. We will work with national leaders to determine the amount of support needed for each missionary so that he or she might live with dignity. The missionaries we support are not mere laborers or instruments of our vision, but they are our brothers and sisters in Christ. We will be concerned not only for their work, but also for their personal well-being and that of their families. Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me” (Matthew 25:40).
- Each member of the HeartCry staff is worthy of his or her labor. Our staff will be afforded that which is required to live with dignity and to demonstrate that the Lord is gracious to supply their needs. To neglect their welfare would give an excuse for the ungodly to bring unjust accusations against the Lord, that He is either uncaring or unable to meet the needs of His servants. Concurrently, those supported by this ministry will not be given so much as to waste the Lord’s resources or acquire luxury. To seek wealth, luxury, or ease in the ministry is to deny the call.
We will not measure the success of this ministry by the amount of money given or the number of missionaries supported. Rather, we will judge our usefulness to the kingdom by our faithfulness to the Scriptures in doctrine, character, and deed. Our goal is not to enlarge ourselves or to become notable figures in the Great Commission. Our aim is to be faithful and obedient stewards according to the grace that is given to us.
