Church Planter (20Schemes) - Edinburgh, Scotland
Bingham is a scheme in Edinburgh that has no gospel church at all. Paul and his family have recently moved there in order to bring the Good News of Jesus to the lost and plant a church by the grace of God.
Testimony of Conversion
I grew in a good loving home. My dad was never around, but it was a stable home all the same. I was quiet at school and did what I was told most of the time. It was when I started high school that my life started to change. I started to make wrong choices in life. I started to dabble with drink and drugs in my early teens. And by the time I was 20 I was messed up with alcohol and drugs. These substances were as much part of my life as food and water was. All through my twenty’s I was slowly losing everything because of my addictive lifestyle. In 2005 when I was 29 years old I was at rock bottom. I had no hope or future. I felt aimless in life and was in a very dark place. I was having serious thoughts of taking my life over a period of six months because I couldn’t get out of the mess I was in.
It was at this point I started to seek help. I had tried to stop living like this a hundred times, but I could never do it. In April 2006, I got accepted to go into a recovery centre in Edinburgh for men with alcohol and drug problems. It was a Christian recovery centre, and is was the first place I had ever heard the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. I had grown up in a Catholic home and knew some of the traditions, but I had never heard he truth the way it was shared in this recovery centre.
Relentlessly, these people who were helping me explained to me that I was a sinner, which I had no problem believing. They also told me I had broken God’s law and deserved His punishment, which again I had no problem believing. But, they also told me of the redeeming work of the Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners and rose victoriously from the dead three days later to give them eternal life. This is the part I struggled with. I couldn’t get my head around why the divine Saviour Jesus would die for a hopeless person like me. They assured me Jesus died for His people and If I repented and believed these great truths, and came under the Lordship of Jesus I would be saved from God’s punishment. After 5 weeks of mulling this over I was compelled to repent of my past life and come under the authority of Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. This was in May 2006.
Right from the start of becoming a Christian I knew something had changed in me. The Lord had given me my life back when I didn’t deserve it, and I promised Him I would give my life to Him in Gospel work. And I have done that to the best of my ability ever since. I was married to my wife, Rachel in 2010. We had our first daughter, Rebekah, in 2012 and my second daughter, Lydia, in 2017. I started working for 20schemes in 2015 training under Mez McConnell.
By the grace of God, we are now planting a church in the Bingham/Magdalene area. God has been very good to me and I am overwhelmed every day by His goodness in my life. Through the transforming power of the Gospel of Lord Jesus Christ I have never returned to my previous lifestyle. We as a family hope to see many more lives transformed by the glorious Gospel as we labour away in the schemes of Scotland.
