The Beginning of the Project
Our literature project was born out of the great need for biblical literature in Cuba, and the near impossibility of getting it. Just a few years ago it became possible to have computers here, as well as DVD burners, USB drives, and smart phones. Even though opportunities are still limited, in the providence of God the different devices allowed us access to some videos and writings of men like Paul Washer, R.C. Sproul, and others, and we came to a better understanding of the gospel. My life and ministry were forever changed by these resources.
For me, it was a big help for someone to share even just a few of these sermons with me, and it was that experience that moved me to think about how the same thing could happen with others if we provided them with some biblical resources. Also, having studied and taught as a professor of Church History in a seminary, I was able to realize the importance that literature distribution had in the Protestant Reformation. I was captivated by the thought that the same impact that the Reformation had in causing the church to return to the gospel so long ago—bringing life to the church and even to the society as a result—could happen here in our nation as well.
These different factors moved my heart to begin this project. During that time I made several trips to Mexico, and despite many obstacles and difficulties, I was able to enter the country with a small printer, a manual hole-puncher, and a stapler. I had about the function of the internet in other countries and the way God had used it to distribute sermons and resources to so many people, and so I thought that in our country normal postal services could serve as our “internet.” So, on October 12, 2014, we began our first printing and together with other brothers we began giving shape to what today we call “Christianity Conformed to the Scriptures.”
How the Project Works
From the beginning, the project has consisted in providing biblical resources—specifically, historic resources—to pastors, leaders, and other members of the churches in Cuba. For years the rich inheritance of the Reformation has been hidden from churches in Cuba and it is our desire to provide them with teaching that will move them to exalt the greatness of God, while humbling the pride of man. Once we began sending out materials, the project quickly became known throughout the entire island. In just a short time, our list of subscribers had grown rapidly, since there was such a lack of biblical resources. All over the country, brothers and sisters began passing our contact information to others and we started to get a lot of written letters, emails, and phone calls, asking us to send them resources. Nearly every day we continue to receive new subscriptions.
Once we receive the request and the information of the brother or sister, we send them a packet of booklets with biblical teaching and a DVD with sermons on the true gospel, as well as sermons on family, prayer, etc. We also began a trimonthly magazine with sermons by godly men from the past. The goal of the magazine is that our generation can know and appreciate the saints that have gone before us, men like Charles Spurgeon, Jonathan Edwards, Martin Lloyd-Jones, the Puritans, etc.
We were also given an opportunity to have our own slot in the greatest media outlet in Cuba. Through this media outlet we were able to circulate hundreds of gigabytes of sermon videos, books in PDF form, and audio sermons to every corner of Cuba. Keeping in mind that internet access is very limited here, this medium allowed us to move great quantities of biblical information to a degree that was otherwise not possible, copying USB devices and sharing them all around the country.
The Fruit of the Project
For the glory of God, the fruit of this ministry has been incalculable. Currently, more than two-thousand people receive our monthly packet of resources. There are thousands of written testimonies of what God has done through this ministry in the life of our brothers and sisters and in their churches. In His grace, God has allowed many pastors to know the glorious and historic doctrines of Christianity and to learn from men like the Puritans. Many brothers and sisters have begun making copies of the resources they’ve received from us in order to use them in their own churches, while others simply pass along the material once they have read it so that its effect can be multiplied in the lives of others. Many people have been rescued out of cults and other false religions and have joined themselves to biblical churches. Many churches have been able to correct certain doctrinal deficiencies and have grown in their ability to preach the biblical gospel. Hundreds of families are being edified by discovering the biblical roles of husband and wife in the home, the practice of family worship, and the importance of the family in the Christian life.
We are amazed by what God has done through this ministry. He has given us more than what we’d ever expected and He has used “Christianity Conformed to the Scriptures” as an instrument in the Cuban church to help us return to the Scriptures.
