Japan is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. While it encompasses a chain of more than 6,800 islands, the four largest islands alone comprise about 97 percent of the country's land area. Though Japan is a constitutional monarchy, its Emperor serves more as a symbol of Japanese unity than an actual political ruler; most of the governmental power lies with the Prime Minister and the elected legislature. The Japanese economy is the third largest in the world, and Japan is also one of the world’s safest countries with regard to violent crime, consistently having one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. The nation faces a unique situation demographically, due to having both one of the world’s lowest birth rates and one of the world's highest life expectancy rates; this poses a serious challenge for the future as the elderly population begins to heavily outweigh the younger.
Despite the economic prosperity of the past century, Japan is seeing many consequences for living a life without regard for the Creator, as the country’s moral condition continues to deteriorate. It has one of the highest annual suicide rates in the world, with over 30,000 each year. The hard-working mentality of the Japanese has resulted in material prosperity, but the drive for materialism now consumes much of the culture’s ambitions. Only ten percent of the population claims belief in the existence of a personal God, while the vast majority practice some form of Buddhism, Shintoism, or one of the hundreds of new religions that have branched off of these. There are 24 entire cities and 595 towns and villages in which there is not a single Evangelical church. Even within the minimal professing Evangelical population of about 0.5 percent, only about half of these people attend church weekly.
