Administrator - Lima, Peru
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Eddy then moved to the United States for over 20 years in pursuit of the American Dream. He was converted in the midst of those pursuits and, shortly after, sensed a call to return to his home country as a missionary. He now serves with HeartCry as the administrator in Peru.
Testimony of Conversion
Greetings in the name of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who alone is mighty to save. I would like to share about His great salvation and tell you of the testimony of His faithfulness in my life.
My mother raised five children in a very humble home, and I was the youngest of my siblings. We grew up in a district of Lima, Peru called Barranco. Without a father present, life was difficult. We often went days with very little to eat, but my mother worked hard and gave us an example to follow. After graduating from high school, I spent a decade working as a salesman, in which I was fairly successful; but the hope of going to America always lingered in the back of my mind. A short time after my mother passed away, I was finally able to travel to the United States in search of the “American Dream” I had heard so much about.
Upon arriving in the United States I was tempted to turn around and run back to the safety of friends and family in Peru. I did not speak any English, and the only contact I had in America was suddenly unable to help me settle into my new life. The first few years were very difficult, but I was able to work hard and earn much more money than I had ever dreamed of while back in Peru. Even working a job that paid below minimum wage in the United States, I was able to bring in more money in one week than I could in an entire month in Peru. That was enough to keep me going.
As the years passed, things really began to look up and I became more accustomed to my new life. I had no desire to ever return to Peru. I was now an American citizen and working for a very reputable company in which I was being promoted further and further up the ladder. With each promotion came a newer house, car, or other novelty. I was only missing one thing; having been raised in a religious society, I felt that I must attend a church. I tried various types of churches and was even convinced that I should tithe a portion of my new earnings. As I did, I noticed that things always seem to get “better” in my life. I truly believed that I was a “good guy,” and yet, that could not have been farther from the truth.
At the point of finally having reached the “American Dream,” the Lord really began to do a work in me. By the providence of God, I had begun attending a solid Bible teaching church in Rochester, NY. Over the months as the word was poured out, the Lord in His mercy began to reveal to me my sin, little by little. He began birthing within me a fear and hatred toward the sin that I once loved. In August of 2004 the Lord saved me and began to drastically transform my life.
One of the immediate changes the Lord brought about in my life was the desire to be married. Previously I was determined to never be committed to any one person, but to live my life as I pleased. A key individual that the Lord used to witness to me along the way to my conversion soon became my wife and partner for life. As I began to grow in the faith, I soon realized that the job that I held, which had once fulfilled me, was keeping me from attending church and fellowship with the saints. I made the decision to leave, despite the objections I received from all sides. Together, my wife and I prayed that the Lord would provide employment sufficient for our needs and with a schedule that allowed us to worship corporately, which He did perfectly.
Just as things began going well in this new position and with the arrival of our second child, the Lord changed things up for us yet again. I had been involved in street evangelism, and after Hurricane Katrina I was able to assist in two different mission trips down to Missouri with our local church. These trips birthed within my heart a desire for missions, specifically in my home city of Lima, Peru. The Lord spoke directly to me through His word, using the following verse: “Return to the land of your fathers and to your family,” and I remembered His promise that He would be with me always. Again the Lord impressed upon me His ability to change the desires of my heart as I began to look forward to the possibility of returning to Peru and sharing the love of Christ.
After a short-term mission of nine months in Lima, we returned to the U.S. to seek the Lord for permanent direction. In 2010, we received confirmation from the Lord and were moved to sell everything in a short period of time and relocate to Lima… without a plan. We acted without doubting, as He had proved so faithful to lead us in the past.
The Lord has brought me back here to Barranco, the very district in which I grew up, to preach good tidings to my family, friends, and fellow countrymen of Peru. My family and I have grown abundantly in grace with our brothers and sisters here at the Church of the Savior, and we wait with great anticipation for the unfolding of His plan to be revealed in our lives.
We thank our God immensely for His provision and guidance and the opportunity to serve here with this body of believers, which continues to challenge and encourage us day by day.
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” - Ephesians 3:20-21
