Church Planter – Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
Living Hope Baptist Church began as a church plant out of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Durban, South Africa from the individuals commuting to Durban from Pietermaritzburg each Sunday. In January 2013, Dave and his wife Pam then heeded the call from HBC to move from their home in Jeffreys Bay so that Dave could head-up the formal planting of LHBC.
In June 2015, after more than two years of faithful service as pastor, Brother Dave passed on the primary preaching role at LHBC to HeartCry missionary Andrew Zekveld. Dave and Pam have relocated to their previous home in Jeffreys Bay and look forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for them in this next chapter of their lives.
Testimony of Conversion
On March 6, 1971, as a depraved, arrogant, self-centered, materialistic, irreligious, young, white, South African, family man, I unhappily went to an “evangelistic outreach” church service, only to please my neighbor. Little did I know then that our Sovereign Father God (YHWH—“Yahweh”) had a plan. Under the sound of the preaching of the Word (Luke 18:18-27), by grace alone I realized my wretched sinfulness, and repented and received the Lord Jesus Christ (Yahshua the Messiah my Lord). This one-time ex-paratrooper of the formerly deceived Apartheid government of South Africa, was now found and forgiven and “made a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5: 17). I was and am no longer full of hatred, “because the love of God has been poured out in (my) heart by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5) and now I am “a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians” (Romans 1:14).
My conversion and Holy-Spirit-enabled witness was instrumental in the conversion of first my wife Pam, then my three brothers, one sister, and mother and father. Two years after conversion the local church leadership (Fynnlands Baptist Church in Durban, South Africa) confirmed our calling into full-time ministry.
From January, 1973 (as a Bible and theology student) to this present day, by the grace and enabling of God, I have continued to have (not ‘til retirement but expirement!) the wonderful privilege and joy of being a part of the Great Commission. It is seeing the lost saved, discipling, teaching/defending the whole counsel of God, planting local churches, and sending missionaries out to continue the work entrusted to the blood-bought, born-again, baptized, Bible-believing, disciples of Christ. As Jesus told us:
“…you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
I cannot share my testimony without deeply thanking my Abba Father for giving to me a godly wife, who continues to stand by me. She is not merely a loving submissive wife, but a role model – first to our four precious daughters and grandchildren, and then also to the many women, wives, and mothers, wherever we have served the LORD.
My motivation for ministry: it is not merely obedience, nor burden, nor gifting, nor to appease my conscience, but the continual desire to grow and continue in that “first love” spoken of in Revelation 2:4, which started the first night God saved me (Romans 5:5).
Finally, my message: the Scriptures alone, Christ alone, Grace alone, Faith alone, and God’s Glory alone (the Five Solas). Thank You!
