Church Planter – New Brunswick, Canada
Curtis was raised in a Christian home but didn't begin to desire God in his word and prayer until around 17 years old. At 19 he attended Bible school with a simple desire to know the Bible. Afterwards felt called to preaching and pastoral ministry. Now he is pastoring a church in Blackville, New Brunswick.
Testimony of Conversion
I grew up in a Christian home. My dad was always in ministry as I grew up and he still is today. Early on in life I professed to be a Christian. I went to church every week, youth group and all the events that would happen with the church. I thought I was always saved, I knew the Gospel, and on the outside I appeared to be moral. But my life was not attached to the vine, and so all my satisfaction was in other things, especially sports and feeding my lust by looking at wicked images.
I cannot pinpoint the exact date and hour of my conversion. But when I really began desiring to read the Word and to fellowship with God's people and to be grieved over my sin, after a while I realized that I wasn't saved when I thought I was. I believe I was truly converted when I was 17.
Call to Ministry
When I was 19, I went to Bible school with the simple intention to know the Bible. I had thought of possibly going into camp ministry. During my first year, the teachers gave me opportunities to speak on Sunday mornings for the student church, which was odd because normally it was only third year students that did that. As I began to do this I felt a real joy.
Throughout the year I was e-mailing a pastor I had known from back home who was really used in the way I viewed scripture and my theology being transformed. After the school year he taught me how to preach. He and I would go to the church and he would get me to preach for him. The people in the churches were confirming to me the gift they believed God had given me to preach.
I did find great joy in studying the Bible and preaching the Word of God, but the task scared me. I thought that it was just so much work to prepare to preach just one message! I found myself running away and thought I would settle down and just work and be a lay person in the church and maybe help out with teaching once in a while. I tried that, but this call to preach couldn't escape me. Doing anything else couldn't bring me satisfaction; it just felt out of place. It soon became clear to me that God had called me to preach the Word. And by the providence of God, being connected with Dave, God led me here to Blackville, New Brunswick.
Brooke's (Spouse) Testimony of Conversion
My wife grew up in non-Christian home. Her mother is Catholic and her father professes to be saved, but is far from it. Her parents are divorced, so she grew up in a broken home. There was a time when she had prayed a prayer earlier in her life but it made no difference. When she was 14, she attended a youth retreat and it was there that the Lord saved her. From that point on it was still tough because she didn't have any biblical teaching or guidance.
Her dad never encouraged her to go to church because he didn't, a matter of fact he was very much against it in many ways. So she starved for fellowship and it was tough to find it. On some weekends when she was at her Dad's she would walk quite a distance to a little Baptist church. The older she got, the more she was able to get around God's people to fellowship more, which helped her to grow in her walk with God. My wife is a miracle of grace!
